Historic Rockery Restoration Project Launches at Valence School

Westerham, Kent – 10 October 2025 – A new chapter in Valence’s proud history has begun, as an exciting community project takes root to restore the historic rockery located within the primary playground at Valence School—part of 18th-century landscaping originally inspired by renowned landscape designer Capability Brown.

The restoration marks the latest phase in an ongoing effort to rejuvenate the grounds surrounding the original Valence house, which dates back to the 1700s. Recent successes include the reinstatement of a picturesque waterfall, long dormant, and now flowing once more as part of the revived naturalistic garden.

The rockery project brings together students, volunteers, and local experts in a shared mission to breathe new life into this unique heritage feature.

As part of Make a Difference Day, students from Radnor House School partnered with Westerham Heights Garden Centre to begin the revitalisation. Under the expert guidance of Simon Scott, owner of the garden centre and an experienced horticulturist, 15 students spent the day clearing the site, planting bulbs and succulents and shaping the foundation of the rockery’s new design.

Simon Scott has generously donated his time and expertise to the project, providing advice on plant selection, placement, and sustainable care. His continued involvement will be instrumental in nurturing the rockery’s growth over the coming seasons.

“We’re thrilled to see the community come together to support this important restoration,” said Matt Strange, Principal at Valence. “Projects like this not only preserve our local heritage, but also offer students hands-on learning experiences that will stay with them for life.”

Valence’s own Hedgehog Class has also played an integral role. Overlooking the rockery from their classroom, students have been learning about the plants being introduced and helping to decide where they should be placed. Their input ensures the project remains both educational and engaging for all involved.

This marks the beginning of a multi-year journey to fully restore the historic rockery, guided by the original vision of the landscape’s early designers. The project is a powerful example of how education, community, and heritage can come together to create something truly meaningful.
