The ‘Friends of Valence School' have opened a shop in Westerham!  This is a significant moment in the school’s history that provides a range of opportunities to celebrate success, raise the profile and enhance the work of the school.  Valence School is extremely excited about this development which places the school at the heart of the local community. The Community Shop not only raises vital funds but provides our students with valuable work experience in our local community.

You will support the manager in the business operations of the shop and have high standards with a strong drive to achieve results as a team, as you will be pivotal to its success.  You will be commercially aware, creative and constantly looking for new opportunities to attract customers and source stock.  You will motivate a team of volunteers whilst creating a safe and dynamic work environment.  This role is unique, varied and demanding, and one in which you will make a real difference and have the opportunity to work with some amazing people.

The Valence Shop operates a volunteer model in which volunteers support the tasks within the shop, including sorting stock and serving customers.  You will be experienced in retail, an excellent communicator who enjoys working with others and is confident at delegating to a team.  Although this position is based in the community shop in Westerham High Street, you will have strong links with and be employed by, the School.

Valence School in Westerham is a KCC Residential and Day Special School for students aged 4-19 years with physical disabilities, complex medical needs and associated learning and communication difficulties.  We are part of the Kent Special Educational Needs Trust (KsENT).  ‘Friends of Valence School’ is the school’s own charity, raising funds to enhance our students’ opportunities and educational lives.

Overlooking Westerham Green, the shop is centrally located next to Vicarage Hill car park and is fully accessible, with front and rear entrances and a large care suite which will enable students to visit for either work experience, learning activities or increased social opportunities.

The shop sells 'new' and 'nearly new' items that have been donated to the shop and school, together with items produced by the students as part of their school curriculum.  Local artists/crafters also rent display space with items for sale.  Activity workshops and other community events are held on a regular basis and there is also a small coffee shop selling refreshments.

Do you have retail experience twinned with a passion to make a real difference?
