Valence School

Our Learners Are:
Respectful - Resilient - Independent - Positive - Passionate

Early Years & Primary

There is a strong multidisciplinary approach to working with our youngest students, with class teachers working alongside Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists and physiotherapists.  This approach maximises learning and ensures that students have access to the correct resources and approaches that are right for them.  Fundamental skills are acquired in this area of the school and the emergence of independence is developed.

Fox Class (Reception and KS1):

Students will have individualised targets, which are set using their EHCP targets and areas from the EYFS curriculum. The EYFS curriculum focuses on seven key strands: Communication and Language, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development, Understanding the World, Expressive Arts and Design, Mathematics, and Literacy. Students’ individual targets will incorporate their EHCP targets and the key strands of the EYFS curriculum, which are specific for each student and their development towards their early learning goals.

Rabbit Class (Engagement Model):

Students in Rabbit Class will follow the Engagement Model, which is for students working below the standard of national curriculum assessments and not engaged in subject-specific study. The Engagement Model has 5 areas of engagement:

  • exploration
  • realisation
  • anticipation
  • persistence
  • initiation

Within these areas, pupils’ engagement in developing new skills, knowledge, and concepts will be assessed.

Owl Class

Hedgehog Class

Deer Class

Students in Hedgehog Class, Owl Class, and Deer Class will follow either the Pre-Key Stage or Key Stage standards. The Pre-Key Stage standards are for students working below the overall standard of the National Curriculum assessments, but who are engaged in subject-specific study. Students are assessed to one of the standards dependent on their level within class. Students will be assessed in Maths and English (reading and writing), and they will be provided a standard from 1-4. Students working on the Key Stage standards will follow the National Curriculum, and they will be assessed formally in English, Maths, and Science.

In all primary classes, students will work towards individualised targets, which are linked to their EHCP outcomes. To help capture evidence for individual targets, we will continue to use the programme Evidence for Learning. Photo and video evidence will be linked to targets and using the Parent Portal shared with parents.
